What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotism as practised by a licensed therapist bears no relation to stage
hypnotism where subjects appear to have no control over their actions. On the contrary, a person having hypnotherapy remains entirely in charge of his or her thoughts and behaviour.
Hypnotherapy is a well established method of helping people to make changes
in their lives through the medium of mental imagery. It is distinctly different
from psychotherapy, an approach based in the discipline of psychology, which
is used to treat mental ill health.
The practice of hypnotherapy
is regulated by a formal code of professional
ethics and stringent criteria concerning confidentiality and care standards.
What Happens in a Hypnotherapy Session?
The therapist undertakes an assistive and supportive role. Using
various
techniques the therapist guides the person into a state of deep relaxation
where they remain completely aware and responsive to external stimuli.
The sensation of hypnotic state is often compared to a daydream or that
familiar early morning feeling of drowsiness.
In a relaxed, yet receptive attitude, people work with their therapist to create
new positive self images, alter perceptions of past events and change unhelpful
behaviour or responses to issues in their lives.
How might it help you?
Hypnotherapy can be an aid to overcoming worries or problems such
as:
1 Smoking and other harmful habits including gambling
2 Obstructive
fears concerning flying, driving, spiders, taking exams or interviews
3
Blushing frequently or nail biting
4 Worrying too much, and too often
5
Overeating and general problems with controlling weight
It can also assist
with
6 pain management
7 sport performance
Growing scientific evidence suggests that good emotional health and
mental wellbeing can be an aid to a healthy immune system. Learning to relax
effectively may alleviate conditions such as migraine or irritable bowel
syndrome (IBS).
