RELAXATION
THERAPY

What is Relaxation Therapy?
Based on the work of Dr Edmund Jacobson – pioneer of Progressive Relaxation technique, this approach is one key skill in the effective management of
harmful stress. Nervous tension can also lead to medical problems such as high
blood pressure, severe headaches or digestive problems. Learning to relax has
more benefits than the relief of anxiety and stress alone.
Being able to relax doesn’t always come naturally; it is a skill like any other
and can be mastered with practice. The technique helps by reducing tiredness
caused by constant tension and relaxes the muscles which cause bodily
discomfort such as backache.
What Do The Sessions Involve?
Progressive relaxation forms one element of the Stress Management Programme,
or can be taken up as a single subject.
The course teaches you how to
relax your body and mind through various
breathing techniques, muscle relaxation and visualisation exercises.
It is designed to enable you to acquire the skills for yourself, so you can call
on them whenever you need to thereafter.
In simple terms, progressive relaxation is based on the technique of
tensing a
particular muscle group, holding it and then letting that tension
go.
In doing so you become more aware of where tension is held in skeletal muscles. Different techniques can be employed and the challenge is to find the one
that suits you. Regular practice will enhance mental and bodily self-awareness,
which is the real key to relaxation and control.
Is Relaxation Therapy For You?
If you have any of these telltale signs of chronic tension, this course may
help you:
Increased consumption of alcohol or cigarettes, poor sleep, tension headaches
or other aches and pains not caused by a medical problem, irritability and so on.
